Fertility Evaluation and Treatment for Patients from Horamavu

About 1 in 7 couples has difficulty conceiving, and when the woman is under 40, more than 80 in 100 couples conceive naturally within a year of regular unprotected sex. If it has taken longer, or you already know of a problem, a fertility evaluation finds the cause and shows which treatment, if any, is needed. Sai Speciality Center in Kasturi Nagar, Bengaluru, sees couples from Horamavu, Banaswadi, KR Puram, Ramamurthy Nagar and Tin Factory for evaluation, ovulation induction and IUI under Dr. Kavitha Lakshmi Easwaran, MBBS, MD (OBG).

Quick answers

  • When should we seek help? After a year of trying without success. Women aged 36 and over, or anyone who already knows of a fertility problem, should go sooner.
  • Who should be tested? Both partners. Problems are found in women, in men, or in both, and in about a quarter of couples no cause is found.
  • What does the first visit involve? A history of your cycles and health, an examination, and a plan for tests.
  • Which treatments do you offer? Ovulation induction and IUI. We also advise when assisted conception such as IVF is the right next step.
  • Can lifestyle help? Yes. A healthy weight, no smoking and little or no alcohol all improve the odds.

Why Pregnancy May Not Happen

In women, the common causes are irregular or absent ovulation, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, and endometriosis. In men, poor semen quality is the main cause. Age, weight that is very high or very low, smoking, heavy drinking, some infections and severe stress all play a part. Two conditions we see often are PCOS (PMOS) and endometriosis, and both can be treated.

What a Fertility Evaluation Includes

  • History and examination: cycle pattern, how long you have been trying, earlier pregnancies, surgeries, medicines and lifestyle
  • Ovulation check: blood tests of hormones and ultrasound scans of the ovaries
  • Womb and tubes: ultrasound, and a test of the fallopian tubes where it is needed
  • Semen analysis for the male partner, which is simple and should be done early
  • Other tests such as thyroid, prolactin and blood sugar, if your history points to them

Our page on infertility evaluation explains each step. Tests are chosen for you rather than ordered as a fixed bundle.

Treatment Options

  • Treating the cause: thyroid disease, PCOS (PMOS), infections or endometriosis are managed first where they are found
  • Ovulation induction: tablets or injections to help the ovaries release an egg, with scans to track the response and avoid over-stimulation
  • IUI: prepared sperm are placed in the womb around ovulation, often combined with ovulation induction
  • Surgery: for conditions such as endometriosis, tubal problems or scar tissue, where it is suitable
  • Assisted conception such as IVF: advised when other treatments are unlikely to work, for example blocked tubes or very poor semen quality

Treatment depends on the cause, your age and how long you have been trying. IVF can cause complications such as multiple pregnancy and a slightly higher risk of ectopic pregnancy, so it is advised only when it is likely to help.

Things You Can Do Now

  • Aim for a healthy weight, because both very high and very low weight can disturb ovulation
  • Stop smoking, and avoid passive smoke
  • Avoid alcohol, or keep it very low
  • Take folic acid before conception, as your doctor advises. See preconception care
  • Have regular intercourse every two to three days through the month, rather than timing one day only
  • Look after your stress and sleep

Coming as a Couple

Fertility is a shared matter, and many couples find that attending together makes the plan clearer. If your partner cannot come to the first visit, bring any semen report. We keep the discussion respectful, private and free of blame.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should we try before seeing a fertility doctor?

After a year of regular unprotected intercourse without pregnancy. If the woman is 36 or older, or either partner already knows of a problem, do not wait that long.

How common is infertility?

About 1 in 7 couples has difficulty conceiving. Many of them go on to conceive with the right advice or treatment.

Do both partners need to be tested?

Yes. Semen quality is a common cause, and a semen analysis is a simple early test.

Can PCOS (PMOS) be treated so that I can conceive?

Often yes. Weight management, ovulation induction and treatment of related problems help many women with PCOS (PMOS) to ovulate and conceive.

What is IUI and who is it for?

IUI places prepared sperm in the womb around the time of ovulation. It may suit couples with mild male factor problems, unexplained infertility or ovulation problems, when the tubes are open.

Do I need IVF?

Not always. IVF is considered when other treatments are unlikely to work or have not worked. Your doctor will explain whether it applies to you.

Does age affect fertility?

Yes. Fertility declines with age, which is why women aged 36 and over are advised to seek help sooner.
