IUI Treatment in Bangalore
IUI (intrauterine insemination) is a fertility treatment in which washed, concentrated sperm is placed into the uterus close to ovulation. It can suit couples with unexplained infertility, mild sperm problems or ovulation problems, provided at least one fallopian tube is open. At Sai Speciality Center in Kasturi Nagar, Bengaluru, fertility care is provided under Dr. Kavitha Lakshmi Easwaran, MBBS, MD (OBG), and starts with a proper evaluation to check whether IUI is the right step for you.
Quick answers
- How long does the procedure take? The insemination itself takes a few minutes. A full cycle involves several short visits over about two weeks for scans and timing.
- Is it painful? Most women feel mild cramping, similar to a Pap smear.
- What are the chances? They depend mainly on age and the cause of infertility, and they are lower per cycle than IVF. Many clinics quote 10 to 20 percent per cycle. Your own figure may be higher or lower.
- When should I take a pregnancy test? About 14 days after the insemination. Testing earlier can give a false result.
- What does it cost? Published estimates in Bangalore run from about Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 20,000 per cycle, depending on medicines and what the quote includes.
What Is IUI and How Does It Work?
In IUI, a semen sample is washed in the laboratory to remove seminal fluid and concentrate the most active sperm. A thin, soft catheter then places these sperm inside the uterus. This shortens the distance the sperm must travel and bypasses the cervix.
Fertilisation still happens inside the body, in the fallopian tube, as in natural conception. That is the main difference from IVF, where eggs are collected and fertilised in a laboratory.
Who May Benefit From IUI?
IUI is usually considered when the fallopian tubes are open and the washed sperm sample is adequate. Situations where doctors may suggest it include:
- Unexplained infertility after a basic evaluation
- Mild male-factor infertility, such as slightly low sperm count or motility
- Ovulation problems such as PCOS, when ovulation induction with timed intercourse has not worked
- Problems with cervical mucus
- Painful intercourse, or difficulty with erection or ejaculation
- Use of donor sperm
- Mild endometriosis, in selected cases
When IUI Is Usually Not the Right Choice
IUI does not work if the sperm cannot reach the egg or the egg cannot be released, so it is often not advised when:
- Both fallopian tubes are blocked or badly damaged
- The sperm count is very low or the sample is severely abnormal
- Ovarian reserve is low, or the woman is in her late thirties or older and time matters more
- Endometriosis is moderate to severe
- Three to four well-timed IUI cycles have already been tried without a pregnancy
In these situations the doctor may discuss IVF instead. A good evaluation should tell you this early, before you spend several cycles on a treatment unlikely to work for you.
Tests Before Your First IUI Cycle
Most doctors check the following before starting. Bring any earlier reports to your first visit.
- Semen analysis, with a sperm-wash trial if the count or motility is borderline
- A test to confirm that at least one fallopian tube is open, such as hysterosalpingography (HSG) or a saline ultrasound test
- Pelvic ultrasound, including an antral follicle count
- Hormone tests as advised, such as AMH, FSH, LH, prolactin and thyroid (TSH)
- Assessment of ovulation and cycle length
Our pages on infertility evaluation and ovulation induction explain these steps in more detail.
The IUI Cycle, Step by Step
Day 2 or 3: baseline scan and plan
An ultrasound on the second or third day of your period checks the ovaries and uterus. The doctor then decides whether to use a natural cycle or ovulation medicines.
Early in the cycle: ovulation medicine, if needed
Tablets such as letrozole or clomiphene are usually taken for five days. Some women need injections instead. The choice depends on your age, ovulation pattern and test results.
Around day 9 to 12: follicle scans
One or more scans track follicle growth and the thickness of the uterine lining. This monitoring is what makes the timing accurate, and it also lets the doctor stop the cycle if too many follicles develop.
Trigger injection or natural LH surge
When the leading follicle is mature, usually around 18 to 20 mm, a trigger injection may be given to release the egg at a predictable time. In a natural cycle, the timing is based on your own hormone surge.
Insemination day
The insemination is usually done within 24 to 36 hours of the trigger. Your partner gives a fresh semen sample, which takes an hour or two to wash and prepare. The procedure itself takes a few minutes, and most women rest for a short while before going home.
After the insemination
Your doctor may prescribe progesterone to support the second half of the cycle. You can carry on with normal daily activity. Strict bed rest is not needed.
Natural-Cycle IUI vs Stimulated IUI
Natural-cycle IUI uses the single egg your body releases, with scans to time the insemination. It avoids medicine side effects and the risk of twins.
Stimulated IUI uses tablets or injections to produce one to a few mature follicles. This can raise the chance per cycle, but it also raises the chance of twins or more. Close scan monitoring, and stopping or changing the cycle when too many follicles develop, keeps this risk low.
IUI Success Rate: What the Evidence Says
There is no single IUI success rate that applies to everyone. The chance in each cycle depends on the woman's age, the cause of infertility, sperm quality, whether ovulation is regular and how many cycles have been tried.
Many clinic websites in India quote about 10 to 20 percent per cycle. These are clinic-reported figures, not figures from a national registry, so treat them as a rough guide only.
Some patterns hold across most clinics:
- The chance per cycle falls with age, more noticeably after about 35
- Most pregnancies from IUI happen in the first three to four cycles
- If there is no pregnancy after three to four well-timed cycles, doctors usually review the diagnosis and consider other options such as IVF
Guidance also differs between countries. In the UK, the NICE guideline on fertility problems (CG156) does not recommend routine IUI for unexplained infertility, mild endometriosis or mild male-factor infertility, and advises IVF instead after a period of trying naturally. Some fertility specialists disagree, and IUI remains widely offered in India as a less invasive, lower-cost first step. This is why a personal discussion about your age, how long you have been trying and your budget matters more than any single statistic.
IUI Treatment Cost in Bangalore
Published estimates from Bangalore clinics, checked in October 2026, commonly fall between about Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 20,000 for one IUI cycle. The gap is wide because clinics include different items, and fertility medicines can add to the total.
The cost of a cycle usually covers some or all of the following:
- Consultation
- Ultrasound monitoring scans
- Ovulation medicines or injections
- Semen analysis and sperm preparation
- The insemination procedure
- Progesterone support
- The pregnancy test
When you compare quotes, ask for an itemised written estimate and check how many scans and which medicines are included. If you need more than one cycle, ask how follow-up cycles are charged. To get a figure for your own situation, call the clinic or book a consultation.
IUI vs IVF: What Is the Difference?
- IUI: Prepared sperm is placed in the uterus. Fertilisation happens inside the body. No egg collection is needed. It is less invasive and usually costs less per cycle, but the chance per cycle is lower.
- IVF: Eggs are collected, fertilised in a laboratory and the embryo is transferred to the uterus. It involves more medicines and procedures and costs more per cycle, but the chance per cycle is higher.
Neither is better for everyone. IVF is more often advised when the tubes are blocked, the sperm count is very low, the woman is older, endometriosis is significant or IUI has not worked after several cycles. Our guide to foods to eat before embryo transfer may help if you are heading towards IVF.
After the Insemination: The Two-Week Wait
Mild cramping, light spotting and bloating can be normal in the days after IUI, especially if you are taking fertility medicines.
Wait the full 14 days before testing. Most trigger injections contain the hormone hCG, which can stay in your body for days and cause a false positive result on an early home test. Ask your doctor which trigger you were given.
Contact the clinic promptly if you have severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever, a rapidly swelling belly, sudden weight gain or breathlessness.
What Can Help Your Chances
- Stop smoking and limit alcohol, for both partners
- Aim for a healthy weight. If you have PCOS, even a modest weight loss can help ovulation
- Take folic acid as your doctor advises
- Get thyroid problems and diabetes under control before treatment
- Attend every scan, because timing is the part of IUI you can protect

Frequently Asked Questions
What is IUI treatment?
IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a fertility treatment in which washed sperm is placed into the uterus around ovulation. Fertilisation then happens inside the body, as in natural conception.
How successful is IUI?
The chance per cycle depends on age, the cause of infertility and sperm quality. Many clinics quote about 10 to 20 percent per cycle, but these are clinic-reported figures. Your doctor can estimate your own chance after an evaluation.
How much does IUI cost in Bangalore?
Published estimates range from about Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 20,000 per cycle, depending on scans, medicines and what the quote includes. Ask for an itemised written estimate before you start.
Is IUI painful?
Most women feel only mild cramping, similar to a Pap smear. The procedure takes a few minutes and does not need anaesthesia.
How many IUI cycles should I try?
Most pregnancies from IUI happen in the first three to four cycles, so doctors usually review the plan after that. The right number depends on your age and diagnosis.
What is the difference between IUI and IVF?
In IUI, sperm is placed in the uterus and fertilisation happens in the body. In IVF, eggs are collected and fertilised in a laboratory. IVF costs more per cycle but has a higher chance per cycle.
Can I have IUI if I have PCOS?
Yes, in selected cases. Doctors usually try ovulation induction with timed intercourse first, and consider IUI if that does not work and the tubes and sperm count are suitable.
When should I take a pregnancy test after IUI?
Wait 14 days after the insemination. Most trigger injections contain hCG, which can cause a false positive if you test too early.
Who should not have IUI?
IUI is usually not advised when both fallopian tubes are blocked, the sperm count is very low, ovarian reserve is low or endometriosis is moderate to severe. Your doctor will tell you if another option is better.
What tests do I need before IUI?
Usually a semen analysis, a test to confirm that at least one fallopian tube is open, a pelvic ultrasound and hormone tests such as AMH and thyroid. Bring earlier reports to your first visit.
How long does the IUI procedure take?
The insemination takes a few minutes. The whole cycle involves several short visits over about two weeks for scans and timing.
Are there any risks with IUI?
Risks are low. They include mild cramping, light spotting, a small chance of infection, and twins or more when ovulation medicines are used. Rarely, the ovaries over-respond to injections.
