Quick answers
- When should I book my first visit? As soon as a home test is positive, and ideally before 12 weeks.
- Which scans are usual? A dating scan at about 11 to 14 weeks and a detailed scan at about 18 to 21 weeks. Your doctor may add others.
- What tests are routine? Blood group and blood count, urine tests, blood pressure checks and, around 24 to 28 weeks, a test for gestational diabetes where advised.
- Do you manage high-risk pregnancies? Yes. Diabetes, high blood pressure, twins, thyroid problems and earlier complications need closer care.
- When should I call urgently? Bleeding, severe pain, leaking fluid, severe headache, fever, or reduced baby movements.
Before You Conceive
If you are planning a pregnancy, a visit beforehand lets us check your health, review medicines, and talk about folic acid, vaccinations, weight, thyroid and blood sugar. Read more on our preconception care page.
What Antenatal Care Involves
The exact timetable depends on your health and how the pregnancy is going, but a typical pattern is:
- First visit: history, examination, blood group, blood count, urine tests, blood pressure, and a plan for the months ahead. Your last period and any earlier pregnancies are reviewed to set a due date
- 11 to 14 weeks: dating scan, which confirms the due date and number of babies. Screening for chromosome conditions can be discussed at this stage
- 18 to 21 weeks: detailed scan to check the baby’s development
- 24 to 28 weeks: a test for gestational diabetes where it is advised, particularly if you have risk factors
- Later visits: blood pressure, urine, growth of the bump, the baby’s movements, and discussion about birth and feeding
Every visit includes blood pressure and urine checks, because high blood pressure and infection can develop quietly. See our pages on antenatal care and pregnancy care and pregnancy tests.
High-Risk Pregnancy Care
A pregnancy needs closer care when there is diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, twins, a previous miscarriage or caesarean, a low-lying placenta, or poor growth of the baby. These women usually need more frequent visits and extra scans. Details are on our high-risk pregnancy care page.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I see a doctor after a positive pregnancy test?
As soon as you can, and ideally before 12 weeks. An early visit lets us confirm the pregnancy, check your health and plan your scans and tests.
How many antenatal visits will I need?
It depends on your health and the pregnancy. Many women are seen more often as the due date approaches, and high-risk pregnancies need more visits. Your doctor will give you a schedule.
What scans do I need during pregnancy?
Most women have a dating scan at about 11 to 14 weeks and a detailed scan at about 18 to 21 weeks. Extra scans are arranged if there is a reason, such as a growth concern or a bleeding episode.
Is it normal to feel the baby move less in late pregnancy?
Babies have quiet spells, but a clear drop in movement is a warning sign. Call the clinic or go to hospital the same day rather than waiting.
What makes a pregnancy high risk?
Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, twins, earlier pregnancy complications or a low-lying placenta. High-risk does not mean something will go wrong, only that closer care is wise.
Can I plan my delivery with you?
Yes. We discuss your options, your health and your preferences, and explain what to do when labour starts. Ask about this at your visit around the third trimester, or sooner if you have questions.
Do I need to see the doctor after the baby is born?
Yes. A postnatal check looks at your recovery, bleeding, mood, feeding and family planning. Contact us earlier if you have fever, heavy bleeding or low mood.
