Fibroid Surgery

Fibroid Surgery in Bangalore

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the womb. Many never need treatment, but surgery is considered when medicines do not help, the fibroids are large or symptoms are getting worse. The main operations are myomectomy, which removes the fibroids and keeps the womb, and hysterectomy, which removes the womb. Which one suits you depends on the size, number and position of the fibroids, your age and whether you want to become pregnant. At Sai Speciality Center in Kasturi Nagar, Bengaluru, fibroid surgery is planned under Dr. Kavitha Lakshmi Easwaran, MBBS, MD (OBG), after a full evaluation.

Quick answers

  • Do all fibroids need surgery? No. Fibroids without symptoms are usually just monitored.
  • What is a myomectomy? An operation that removes fibroids and leaves the womb in place, so pregnancy may still be possible.
  • Can fibroids come back? Yes. New fibroids can grow after a myomectomy, so follow-up matters.
  • Does surgery affect fertility? A myomectomy can help some women conceive. A hysterectomy ends fertility.
  • Are there non-surgical options? Yes: medicines for bleeding and pain, and uterine artery embolisation in selected women.

When Is Surgery Considered for Fibroids?

Your doctor may suggest surgery or another procedure if:

  • Heavy periods continue despite medicines and cause anaemia
  • Fibroids are large or press on the bladder or bowel
  • Pain or pressure is affecting daily life
  • Fibroids are growing quickly
  • A fibroid in the uterine cavity is affecting fertility or causing repeated miscarriage

Our page on fibroid treatment covers symptoms, diagnosis and non-surgical care.

Treatments to Try Before Surgery

  • Painkillers such as ibuprofen or naproxen for pain and heavy bleeding, if suitable for you
  • Tranexamic acid or hormonal treatment, such as the combined pill, to reduce bleeding
  • Treatment of anaemia with iron

These ease symptoms but do not remove the fibroids.

Surgical and Procedural Options

Myomectomy

Myomectomy removes the fibroids and keeps the womb. It is usually chosen by women who want to keep their fertility or their uterus. There are three main routes:

  • Hysteroscopic myomectomy: for fibroids inside the uterine cavity, removed through the vagina with a thin camera and no cut
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy: keyhole surgery for suitable fibroids on or in the wall of the womb
  • Open (abdominal) myomectomy: through a cut in the lower abdomen, usually for large or many fibroids

Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy removes the fibroids by removing the womb. It is a permanent solution for fibroid symptoms, but it ends fertility and stops periods. Read more on hysterectomy.

Uterine artery embolisation

This non-surgical procedure blocks the blood supply to the fibroids so they shrink. It may suit some women who want to avoid an operation. It can affect future pregnancies, so it needs careful discussion if you plan to conceive.

Endometrial ablation

This treats the lining of the womb with heat to reduce bleeding. It does not remove fibroids, and it is not suitable if you want children in the future.

Planning Your Surgery

  • An ultrasound, and sometimes an MRI, to map the number, size and position of the fibroids
  • Blood tests, and iron treatment if you are anaemic
  • In some cases, medicines before surgery to reduce bleeding or fibroid size
  • A discussion of future pregnancy plans, the risks and the surgical route
  • Anaesthesia assessment

Keyhole surgery is preferred where it is safe, because it usually means smaller scars, less pain and a quicker recovery. See laparoscopic gynaecology surgery for what to expect.

Recovery After Fibroid Surgery

Recovery depends on the route. Hysteroscopic myomectomy usually needs a short stay, while open surgery needs longer in hospital and several weeks to recover fully. In general:

  • Walk a little every day and avoid heavy lifting until your doctor allows it
  • Expect some bleeding or spotting for a few days to weeks
  • Keep your follow-up visits and scans

Contact the clinic or go to hospital if you have fever, heavy bleeding, severe pain, wound redness or discharge, or difficulty passing urine.

Risks of Fibroid Surgery

All operations carry risks. For fibroid surgery these include bleeding, infection, scar tissue, injury to nearby organs and, rarely, the need to change to a different type of surgery. Fibroids can grow back after a myomectomy. Your surgeon will explain the risks that apply to you.

Pregnancy After Fibroid Surgery

Many women conceive after a myomectomy. Your surgeon will tell you how long to wait before trying, and whether you may need a caesarean delivery in a future pregnancy, which depends on how deeply the womb wall was cut. Planning pregnancy with a doctor's guidance is safer. A preconception check-up can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do fibroids need surgery?

When medicines do not control heavy bleeding or pain, when fibroids are large or growing, or when they press on nearby organs or affect fertility.

What is the difference between myomectomy and hysterectomy?

Myomectomy removes the fibroids and keeps the womb. Hysterectomy removes the womb, which ends periods and pregnancy.

Can I get pregnant after fibroid removal?

Many women do. Your surgeon will advise how long to wait and whether a caesarean may be needed in a later pregnancy.

Can fibroids grow back after surgery?

Yes. New fibroids can develop after a myomectomy, which is why follow-up is important. A hysterectomy removes the possibility entirely.

Is fibroid surgery done by keyhole?

Often yes, if the fibroids are suitable in number, size and position. Larger or many fibroids may need open surgery.

How long is recovery after myomectomy?

It depends on the route. Hysteroscopic surgery has a short recovery, while open surgery takes several weeks. Your doctor will give you a plan.

Are there treatments that avoid surgery?

Yes. Medicines can reduce bleeding and pain, and uterine artery embolisation may suit some women. They do not all preserve fertility, so discuss your plans first.

Are fibroids cancerous?

Fibroids are almost always non-cancerous. A fast-growing fibroid or new bleeding after menopause should be checked by a doctor.

Do I need iron treatment before surgery?

If heavy bleeding has caused anaemia, treating it before surgery makes the operation safer. Your doctor will check your haemoglobin.
